Vision for Vashon - Working Groups Reports - With Video!

The Vision For Vashon website now has dedicated sections for the six V4V Working Groups. These Working Groups are each blooming in their own varied ways as organic outcroppings of our April Vision For Vashon Forum. Our goal here is to provide an online hub for information and communication relating to these six working groups.

For starters, dig in below to watch video and digest notes from the April Forum. Then, please feel free to let us know how we can make it better for you all!

V4V Forum Videos

On Saturday, April 25, close to 100 people attended one part or another of an eight-hour Island-wide meeting designed to generate ideas and action plans in the areas of affordable housing, sustainability on Vashon, energy and transportation, health and wellness, local exchange currency, and food security.

The forum was entitled Reweaving the Fabric of Community, and featured thoughtful presentations, animated discussions, tabling by some fifteen Island organizations, a delicious dinner and dancing to the music of Vashon favorite Bob Krinsky with musical friends from Seattle.

These videos are from Vision4Vashon forum April 2009...

Carbon sequestration at Island Center Forest

Forty volunteers planted 1,200 tree seedlings at Island Center Forest in one of the most interesting King County habitat restoration projects. Part of a collaboration with King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, the University of Washington and Friends of Island Center Forest, a barren “borrow pit” site has become a cutting-edge demonstration project where researchers will study the use of compost and its ability to capture and store carbon while rebuilding the fertility of degraded soils. Are you ready to put the fun between your legs?

Bristol and Copenhagen Nov 24th – Dec 09th

An irresistible new machine of resistance will be launched during the COP15 UN summit protests in Copenhagen. Made from hundreds of old bicycles and thousands of activists' bodies 'Put the fun between your legs: Operation Bike Bloc' is a collaboration between Climate Camp (www.climatecamp.org.uk) and art activist collective The Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination (www.labofii.net).

Infamous for touring the UK recruiting a rebel clown army, running courses in postcapitalist culture, throwing snowballs at bankers and launching a rebel raft regatta, the Lab of ii’s creative visions will combine with the Climate Camp’s logistical genius, radical politics and capacity for mass mobilization to engineer an entirely new form of civil disobedience.

Bike hackers, welders, activists, artists and engineers will team up to design the resistance machine in Bristol, UK. It will then be built and launched in Copenhagen as part of the Climate Justice Action mobilizations. The Bike Bloc will merge device of mass transportation and pedal powered resistance tool, postcapitalist bike gang and art bike carnival. We invite you to put the fun between your legs and become the bike bloc.

If you want to help design and build the prototype come to the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol between the 24th – 29th November (http://www.arnolfini.org.uk/whatson/events/details/538). Or join us in Copenhagen, at the Candyfactory (http://bolsjefabrikken.com) to build the final design and train up for the action (6th – 15th December). On the 16th of December the Bike Bloc will swarm through the streets during the Reclaim Power action for climate justice. (www.climate-justice-action.org).

If this doesn’t inspire you to book your trip to Copenhagen, maybe our promo video will provide the spark you need (best watched in HQ):
