On Saturday, April 25, close to 100 people attended one part or another of an eight-hour Island-wide meeting designed to generate ideas and action plans in the areas of affordable housing, sustainability on Vashon, energy and transportation, health and wellness, local exchange currency, and food security. The forum was entitled Reweaving the Fabric of Community, and featured thoughtful presentations, animated discussions, tabling by some fifteen Island organizations, a delicious dinner and dancing to the music of Vashon favorite Bob Krinsky with musical friends from Seattle.

The Format...

Participants in each of the six major topic areas were asked to identify three action areas and sign up for one or more, in order to "pick up a piece" of the reweaving task. Those areas and some additional posted notes from the various discussions are included below. This website intends to serve as at least a temporary clearninghouse and communication/coordination tool for the initiatives sparked by forum discussions.

What's Next...

A number of followups are possible. We encourage folks to link with existing island organizations which seem a good fit, in order to strengthen both the new initiatives from the forum, and the existing organizations. In some cases, such as the community solar working group, a strong group identity and flow of communication has already been established; even in this case, however, the Vision for Vashon website can serve as a vehicle for announcements and broader sharing where appropriate.

Other possible followups include a youth organizing workshop, a community fundraising workshop, and a strategic planning session led by expert consultants. Please let us know your interests and suggestions for followups to this ongoing reweaving process.
